COURT CASE:
- having meningitis
- our brain and spinal cord meninges being inflamed
- the meningeal membranes that protect our brain and spinal cord (meninges) being inflamed
- our dura mater, arachnoid, and/or pia mater being inflamed
- meningeal inflammation
- meningeal irritation
- having viral (aseptic) meningitis
- our brain and spinal cord meninges being inflamed as a result of a viral infection
- being at risk for getting infected with viral meningitis because we had at least one previous viralbased infection
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we had mumps, measles, herpes, paramyxovirus, enterovirus, and/or arbovirus (West Nile virus)
- having clear cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) on our CSF analysis or lumbar puncture
- having bacterial (septic) meningitis
- our brain and spinal cord meninges being inflamed as a result of a bacterial infection
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we had at least one previous bacterial-based infection in which the microorganism that caused it was Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, and/or meningococcal meningitis
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we had otitis media, pneumonia, and/or sinusitis in which the microorganism that caused it was Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, and/or meningococcal meningitis
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis secondary to us having bacteremia-especially from pneumonia, empyema, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, sinusitis, otitis media, encephalitis, myelitis, and/or brain abscess
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we had an invasive procedure, lumbar puncture, neurosurgery, ventricular shunting, skull fracture, head trauma, and/or a penetrating head wound
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we live in a crowded and/or communal living situation
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we’re a residential college student
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we live in a long-term care facility
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we live in prison
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we are in the military and live in a communal living situation
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we’re immunocompromised
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we have at least one chronic disease
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we smoke cigarettes
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we didn’t get the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we didn’t get the Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV)
- being at risk for getting infected with bacterial meningitis because we didn’t get the meningococcal vaccine (MCV4 or Neisseria meningitidis)
- getting infected with bacterial meningitis
- infecting others with bacterial meningitis
- infecting others with bacterial meningitis via our droplets
- infecting others with bacterial meningitis via droplets from our nasopharyngeal secretions
- headache
- having an excruciating, constant headache
- having bulging anterior fontanels
- nuchal rigidity (stiff neck)
- stiff back
- visual alterations
- diplopia (seeing two images of the same object)
- photophobia (being sensitive to light)
- fevers
- chills
- poor feeding
- anorexia
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- malaise
- lethargy
- tiredness
- fatigue
- having an altered level of consciousness
- irritable
- having a poor or high shrill cry
- confusion
- deep stupor
- delirium
- coma
- having a positive Kernig’s sign (experiencing pain or resistance when our leg is flexed at the hip or knee while we’re in a supine position)
- having a positive Brudzinski’s sign (our hips or knees flex when someone places their hands behind our neck and bends our neck forward)
- opisthotonos (a spasm in which our back and extremities arch backward so that our body rests on our head and heels)
- hyperactive deep tendon reflexes
- exaggerated deep tendon reflexes
- tachycardia
- twitching
- seizures
- having red macular rash as a result of us having meningococcal meningitis
- having a petechial, purpuric, or ecchymotic rash on the lower part of our body as a result of us having meningococcal meningitis
- having muscle pain as a result of us having meningococcal meningitis and/or H. influenzae
- having joint pain as a result of us having meningococcal meningitis and/or H. influenzae
- our ears chronically draining as a result of us having pneumococcal meningitis
- hearing loss
- restlessness
- irritability
- leukocytosis
- elevated white blood cell count (a sign of infection)
- elevated protein levels
- decreased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) glucose levels/concentration
- having cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) appear on our CSF analysis or lumbar puncture
- having cloudy or milky fluid appear on our CSF analysis or lumbar puncture
- having a positive Gram stain and culture from our CSF fluid
- having elevated CSF pressure
- developing sepsis due to us having bacterial meningitis
- being highly contagious because we have bacterial meningitis
